Computational mechanics is expected to be going to develop more and more as the third method that follows theoretical and the experimental methods in various fields of science and engineering such as biotechnology, nano science and digital engineering. It is expected to become an important technical common basis that contributes to strengthening the industrial competitiveness in the 21st century. In order to develop practicable simulation software of the cutting edge, the Frontier Simulation Software for Industrial Science project was initiated in 2002 and has been promoted by the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS), the University of Tokyo as a part of the IT program sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). With the progress of this project the importance of domestic and strategic production of the cutting-edge simulation software has been recognized to the general society at a pace that far exceeds our expectation. On the other hand the acceleration of the development of further software contents is keenly being demanded by the society with its expectation to become the world leader in computational mechanics.

Under these situations Revolutionary Simulation Software project started in 2005 as a part of the next-generation IT program sponsored by MEXT. This project is also lead by the IIS, the University of Tokyo and has taken over the original project with the following newly added software contents: blood flow simulation in human body, fire and pollutant dispersion in city and fully-coupled multi-physics simulation. The renewed project consists of:

I.
Life simulation,
II.
Multi-physics multi-scale simulation,
III.
safety and environmental simulation for urban cities and
IV.
Common libraries for high-performance computing.
