Greeting
Computational science and engineering play important roles as an infrastructure technology that supports industry. Particularly in the frontier fields of science and engineering such as bioscience and nanotechnology, it acts as a key technology to accrue industrial competitive power. The quality of hardware for scientific computations and of basic studies for application software in our country are in line with those in America and Europe, and a part of these are highest in the world, such as "the Earth Simulator". However, when it comes to the development of application software for practical use, we often lag behind the West. Most all of the application softwares used in Japan are made in the West. This trend should be apprehended from the viewpoint of the maintenance and strengthening of the industrial competitive power of our country. One of the reasons why our strong points did not lead to the development of fine application softwares is that in Japan "the development of the demonstration softwares" for expanding the application softwares beyond the basic studies has been brittle. Another serious reason is that a few research projects for software development exist, in which the only view is training of talented people who can develop application softwares. In the West, at present the research and development of computational science and engineering are national commitments, and the development of application softwares is being progressed quickly. We, from a viewpoint of strengthening of the industrial competitive power of our country, also need keenly to tackle immediately the development of ultramodern practical softwares for, e.g., bioscience and nanotechnology being in the world level and, simultaneously, to establish immediately the organizations for the development and maintenance of application softwares that involve the training of talented people who can develop application softwares. Such a measure can be realized only by the cooperation of industrial circles and academic institutions. Based on such a situation in Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbu-Kagaku-Sho) have started a research project?IT-program "Frontier Simulation Software for Industrial Science" in 2002. The aim of this project is, in short, to establish the organizations for the development and maintenance of practical softwares for computational science and engineering. For this purpose, we are promoting this project by cooperation of industrial, administrative and academic sectors by establishing the "Collaborative Research Center of Frontier Simulation Software for Industrial Science" in the Institute of Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo and, moreover, by establishing a venture company "Advance Soft, Inc." for the cooperative study of private enterprises to develop ultramodern practical softwares. This symposium will introduce the present condition of this research project. In particular we will focus the new trial of industry, academia and government cooperation, which is one of features of this project. We expect that many people will attend this symposium.
