We developed a 3D rigid body spring model (RBSM) to simulate a failure of a reinforced concrete (RC) structure at the mesoscale, with the shape of the steel bars directly modeled. In reality, not only are RC structures subjected to mechanical loading, but they are subject also to environmental conditions. Hence, to broaden the applicability of 3D RBSM, a truss network is being developed to model the substance movement because of the environmental exposure. A combination of both of the simulations could be a powerful tool for assessing the deteriorated RC structures on site and predicting their life span.
