Research content

The Kato Laboratory at the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo is developing prediction and evaluation methods related to the thermal-air environment in buildings and urban area. The research seeks to clarify the environmental structure in buildings and urban area and through this to propose plans for more efficient, safe, and comfortable living environments. The main research themes are: 1) to develop an automatic design optimization system for an indoor thermal-air environment based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), 2) to identify indoor chemical air pollution and to develop a healthy, clean indoor environment, 3) to develop simulators related to the spread of fire, the movement of smoke, and the diffusion of pollutants, 4) to examine ventilation efficiency in a large indoor thermal-air environment, and 5) to research and develop new low-energy air-conditioning system.
