We are developing modeling and computational methods for turbulence. While advances in computers have made large-scale simulation of complex fluid phenomena possible, improving basic physical models and computational methods remains essential. We seek to develop computational methods that can be applied to large-scale, high-speed flows by elucidating statistical properties and physical structures of turbulence, and by improving turbulence models based on such understanding. To understand these properties, we rely on theoretical analysis based on fundamental equations and large-scale simulations of basic flow fields. We are also studying the turbulence of electrically conducting fluids such as liquid metals and plasma fluids as examples of fluid motion that exhibits complex physical phenomena.
